Cutworm Nematodes
Cutworm Nematodes
Cutworm nematodes are a specialised solution for controlling cutworms, the nocturnal pests that can damage a wide variety of plants, fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Despite their name, cutworms are caterpillars from a diverse genus of moth larvae. Cutworm Nematodes, a blend of Steinernema species, offer a potent defence by targeting these pests directly.
Effective protection against cutworms with nematodes
Cutworms are active at night, emerging from the soil to attack plant stems, which they cut down. They can vary in colour—brown, yellow, or green—and are soft-bodied, about 1 inch long, with distinct stripes. Infestations are marked by droppings, cut-off plants at the base, and cutworms curling into a C-shape when disturbed. Look for stems of annual plants being girdled or severed at ground level and nocturnal feeding on the leaves of low-growing herbaceous plants.
Ideal conditions for applying nematodes
Apply cutworm nematodes when the soil temperature is at least 10°C, avoiding extreme cold or heat. After application, water plants within 30 minutes to wash nematodes off the leaves and into the soil, where they can effectively combat cutworms. Keep the soil moist to enhance nematode activity.
Cutworm nematode storage and usage
Store nematodes immediately upon delivery in the refrigerator or at temperatures below 5°C. Use them before the expiry date on the package for best results. By following these guidelines, you can effectively protect your garden from the nocturnal threat of cutworms and ensure the health of your plants throughout the year.
