Gooseberry sawfly nematodes provide a natural way to manage larvae that damage gooseberry and currant plants. These microscopic beneficials move through the soil to locate the pests, helping defend plants and limit future outbreaks.
This treatment works without chemical pesticides and is suitable for gardens where children, pets and wildlife are present, making it a natural option for managing pests.
Biological Control For Gooseberry Sawfly
Gooseberry sawfly larvae can quickly defoliate gooseberry and currant bushes, leaving plants weakened and affecting fruit yields. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic organisms that locate the larvae and interrupt their development.
After application, the nematodes move through the soil where the larvae pupate. By targeting the pest at this stage, they help break the life cycle and limit future outbreaks.
Garden Friendly Pest Control
This treatment uses naturally occurring nematodes that are already found in soil environments. They specifically target pest larvae and do not rely on chemical insecticides, making them suitable for wildlife friendly gardens.
How Gooseberry Sawfly Nematodes Work
The nematodes are mixed with water and applied to the garden where they move through the soil to locate gooseberry sawfly larvae. Once inside the host, they release naturally occurring bacteria that stop the larvae feeding and developing.
This targeted process helps protect gooseberry and currant bushes while maintaining a balanced garden environment.
Application Instructions
Preparing The Nematode Mixture
Empty one sachet into 2.5 litres of water and stir thoroughly to produce a stock mixture. Once prepared, this mixture should be used within four hours.
Add the stock mixture to a sprayer or watering can and dilute with a further 4.5 litres of water to create a total of 7 litres of working solution.
Applying Gooseberry Sawfly Nematodes
Apply the solution as either a spray or watering treatment, making sure the leaves, branches and soil around the base of the bush are covered. If spraying the foliage, water the plants within 30 minutes so the nematodes are washed into the soil where the pests pupate.
Each sachet treats approximately:
- 5 to 7 smaller bushes
- 3 to 5 larger bushes
- Up to around 30m² of planting area
Use approximately 250ml to 500ml of solution per square metre.
Best Conditions For Use
- Minimum soil temperature of 8°C
- Apply during the evening, overcast weather or light rainfall
- Keep the soil moist for 3 to 4 weeks after treatment
- Water the area immediately after application
- Please note these are live organisms. They are non returnable and have a shelf life of approximately two weeks.
