What are Sciarid fly nematodes?

Sciarid fly nematodes target the larvae of the sciarid fly, also known as fungus gnat or compost fly. By attacking the larvae, these nematodes significantly reduce the population of sciarid flies and help prevent damage to plant roots and seedlings

When and how should I apply sciarid fly nematodes?

Apply sciarid fly nematodes from April to August, though they can be used year-round indoors on houseplants. Water the nematodes into moist soil around the roots of plants using a watering can with a coarse rose head or a hose-end applicator for larger areas

Are Sciarid Fly Nematodes safe to use on all plants?

Yes, sciarid fly nematodes are safe for use on fruit and vegetables, and these can be eaten immediately after application. They are also harmless to children, pets, and wildlife, making them a safe and effective solution for pest control.

Sciarid flies, scientifically referred to as dark-winged fungus gnats, belong to the family Sciaridae. These insects are predominantly found in moist environments, such as damp soil, decaying organic matter, and compost, making them common inhabitants of greenhouses and gardens.

How big are sciarid flies?

Adult sciarid flies typically range from 2 to 5 millimeters in length, characterised by their elongated bodies, long legs, and dark, translucent wings. The life cycle of these flies consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

The larvae primarily feed on organic matter, including plant roots and fungi, which can adversely affect the health of plants, particularly seedlings.

How do sciarid flies damage plants?

Sciarid flies primarily damage plants through their larvae, which feed on the roots, hindering nutrient and water uptake. This root damage is particularly problematic for young or fragile seedlings, leading to reduced growth and weak plants that are more susceptible to diseases.

Additionally, the feeding creates open wounds that can promote fungal infections, further stressing the plants.

Prolonged larval feeding can cause symptoms like wilting and yellowing leaves, and in severe cases, may result in plant death. Furthermore, while the larvae contribute to the decomposition of organic matter, an overpopulation can disrupt the balance of beneficial microorganisms in the soil, negatively impacting overall plant health. Therefore, managing sciarid fly populations is crucial for maintaining healthy plants.

Facts about Sciarid flies

Tiny Yet Numerous: Sciarid flies can lay hundreds of eggs at a time, leading to rapid population growth. A small infestation can quickly become a big problem!

Natural Decomposers: While their larvae can be pests, they also play a role in breaking down organic matter, contributing to nutrient recycling in the ecosystem.

Sensitive to Light: Adult sciarid flies are attracted to light, which is why you often see them hovering around windows or light fixtures.

Fungi Lovers: The larvae are particularly fond of feeding on fungi, making them integral to soil health and the decomposition process.

Unique Mating Rituals: Male sciarid flies often engage in elaborate courtship displays, including aerial dances to attract females.

Beneficial Nematodes: Some gardeners use beneficial nematodes as a biological control method against sciarid fly larvae, highlighting their role in integrated pest management.

Short Lifespan: Adult sciarid flies typically live only a few weeks, but in that time, they can reproduce rapidly, making management essential.

Wide Distribution: Sciarid flies can be found in many parts of the world, thriving in both natural and artificial environments, from forests to greenhouses.

Application Instructions:

Store nematodes as soon as they arrive. Keep them in the fridge or at temperatures below 5°C until the expiration date indicated on the package.

Important: Do not freeze or expose nematodes to high temperatures. The minimum soil temperature for application is 8°C.

Ensure the soil is moist and maintain moisture for three to four weeks post-application. Apply in the evening, during overcast conditions, or while it's raining. Water the area immediately after application.

If applying over plants, water them within 30 minutes to wash the nematodes off the leaves and back into the soil.

How to apply the sciarid Fly Nematodes

  1. Prepare the Nematodes: Use the entire package. Create a stock solution by emptying the packet into 1.2L of water and stir continuously. This mixture must be used within 4 hours.

  2. Dilute the Solution: Take 0.6L of the stock solution and mix it in a separate bucket with 5.4L of water, stirring continuously.

  3. Transfer to Watering Can: Pour the 6L solution from the bucket into a watering can. This amount will treat an area of 6m².

  4. Repeat: Continue this process until the entire stock solution has been used, then water the treated area with the watering can or a hose.

Nematode applicators can be used for ease of use.
