Chafer grubs are pests that cause yellow patches and slow grass growth in lawns. These grubs feed on grass roots, weakening the turf and making it susceptible to further damage and disease. Chafer grubs primarily damage grasses, causing brown patches on lawns and turf by feeding on the roots but they can also harm crops, ornamental plants, and young trees by eating their roots, leading to stunted growth and weakened plants.

What Are Chafer Grubs and how do I recognize them?

To recognize a chafer grub, look for a C-shaped, creamy-white larva with a brown head and six prominent legs near the front. They are usually about 1.5–3 cm long, with a darker, swollen abdomen, often visible through the skin. These grubs are typically found in soil, especially in grassy areas, where they feed on roots, causing patches of dead or damaged grass.

What damage do Chafer Grubs do?

Damage caused by chafer grubs typically appears as irregular patches of dead or dying grass in lawns or turf. The grass may easily lift away from the soil, as the grubs feed on the roots, weakening the plants. You might also notice increased activity from birds, raccoons, or other animals digging up the turf to feed on the grubs. The affected areas can turn brown and thin out, especially during late summer and early fall when the grubs are most active.

When and How to Apply Chafer Grub Nematodes

Best Time for Application: Apply chafer grub nematodes from August to October for optimal results. Depending on pest activity and environmental conditions, they can still be effective outside this period.

Application Instructions: Each pack treats up to 100 square metres. Keep the nematodes refrigerated until use and apply them by the expiry date, typically around 2 weeks after delivery. Note that as live organisms, nematodes cannot be returned. Can apply with any nematode applicator.

Nematode FAQ

How do I apply nematodes? Mix them with water and apply to soil using a watering can or sprayer. Follow instructions on the back of the packet. Ensure to use by expiry date.

When is the best time to apply nematodes? Early morning or late evening when the soil is moist and temperatures are cooler.

How often should I apply nematodes? Reapply every 4-6 weeks, depending on pest levels.

Can I use nematodes with other pest control methods? Yes, but avoid chemical pesticides that could harm them. Organic methods are safe.

How do I store nematodes before use? Keep them in the refrigerator and use before the expiration date.

What pests can nematodes control? Nematodes can target a variety of pests, including grubs, weevils, and caterpillars.

Can I use nematodes indoors? Yes, nematodes can be used for indoor plants to control soil-dwelling pests.

How long do nematodes remain effective after application? Nematodes typically remain effective in the soil for about 6 weeks.

Do nematodes harm beneficial insects? No, nematodes are specific to their target pests and do not harm beneficial insects.

Can I apply nematodes in the rain? Light rain is fine, but heavy rain can wash them away. It’s best to apply when rain is not expected.

How do I know if nematodes are working? You should see a reduction in pest activity within a few weeks. Monitoring pest levels can help confirm their effectiveness.

Can I use nematodes in my vegetable garden? Yes, nematodes are safe for use in vegetable gardens and do not harm edible plants.

Do nematodes need to be watered in after application? Yes, keeping the soil moist for at least two weeks after application helps the nematodes establish.

Are there different types of nematodes for different pests? Yes, specific nematode species target different pests, so choose the right type for your needs.

Can I mix nematodes with fertilizers? It’s best to apply fertilizers separately to avoid harming the nematodes. Wait a couple of weeks between applications.

What is the ideal soil temperature for applying nematodes? Nematodes are most effective when the soil temperature is between 13°C and 29°C (55°F to 85°F)
