Protect your garden, greenhouse, or houseplants from destructive thrips with our effective and eco-friendly Thrip Nematodes. These beneficial microscopic organisms target and eliminate thrip larvae and pupae, breaking their life cycle and preventing further damage.
What are thrips?
Often called thunder flies, thrips are tiny insects that can cause significant harm to plants. They suck sap from leaves and flowers, leaving behind unsightly silvering and distorted growth.
What are the signs from thrip damage?
Leaves infested by thrips often turn a dull green and later develop silvery-white patches on their upper sides. These patches are usually dotted with numerous tiny black excrement spots.
How to these beneficial nematodes work?
Simply apply the nematodes for thrips to your plants, where they will actively hunt down and destroy thrip larvae and pupae. Safe for humans, pets, and beneficial insects, our nematodes are a natural and sustainable solution for thrip control.
Do Nematodes for thrips kill them?
Nematodes can effectively target and kill thrips. Beneficial nematodes, such as Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, are particularly effective against thrips by attacking their pupae in the soil. These nematodes enter the thrips’ bodies and release symbiotic bacteria, which quickly kill the host.
Using nematodes as a biological control method is a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to manage thrips infestations. They are especially useful in greenhouses and gardens where chemical pesticides might not be desirable.
Storage Instructions:
Store the nematodes in the fridge or at temperatures below 5°C as soon as possible after delivery, and use them before the expiry date printed on the package. Avoid freezing or exposing them to high temperatures to maintain effectiveness.
Application Conditions:
For optimal application, ensure the soil temperature is at least 5°C, and keep the soil moist for three to four weeks following treatment. Apply the nematode solution in the evening, during overcast weather, or when it’s raining for best results. Water the treated area immediately after application.
Usage Instructions:
- Wet foliage before application.
- Make a stock solution by emptying one sachet into 2.5L of water and stir continuously. Use this solution within 4 hours.
- Pour the 2.5L stock solution into your sprayer and mix with 4.5L of water, stirring continuously to make a 7L solution.
- Apply the solution as a foliar spray, ensuring direct contact with the pests. Start spraying from the bottom up, treating the center of the plant. Alternatively, you can use a watering can, ensuring the plants are thoroughly soaked.
Each sachet treats an area of up to 30 square meters, using 250-500 ml of nematode solution per square meter for thorough coverage. To achieve the best results, repeat the treatment after 5-7 days. Keep an eye out for any new thrips, and reapply if necessary to maintain effective control over infestations.
Facts about thrips
Thrips are intriguing yet minuscule insects, typically less than 1 mm long, with distinctive fringed wings. Despite their size, they can inflict considerable damage on plants by sucking sap from plant tissues, leading to discoloration, scarring, and sometimes stunted growth. This feeding behavior can significantly impact plant health and appearance.
One notable characteristic of thrips is their rapid reproduction rate. They can produce multiple generations in a single growing season, making infestations challenging to control. Additionally, some thrips species are known to transmit plant diseases, such as the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, complicating their management further.
Thrips are globally widespread, with over 6,000 species identified. Their lifecycle includes several stages, from egg to adult, with larval and pupal stages in between. This complex lifecycle can make effective control difficult.
