What are Leatherjackets?
Leatherjackets are the legless, greyish-brown larvae of the crane fly, often known as daddy long legs. Eggs are laid in August, and the hatched larvae then begin feeding on grass roots from September through to the following spring. These pests can also migrate to flower beds, weakening plants and making them more susceptible to drought.
Identifying Leatherjacket Damage
Lawn damage caused by leatherjackets typically occurs between autumn and spring. Grass starts to yellow and weaken due to root damage. It becomes easy to pull up the grass with little or no root growth. The severity of damage is often worse in mild, wet autumns.
Secondary damage can also occur as birds and mammals dig up the turf in search of these pests. Adult crane flies emerge from pupae in late July and August, laying eggs in the ground within 24 hours. The larvae hatch approximately two weeks later and commence feeding on grass roots, a process that continues through winter and into spring. These larvae are greyish-brown and legless.
How and When to Apply Leatherjacket Nematodes
Leatherjacket nematodes are most effective when applied from late August to October. For heavy infestations, a second application in April or May is recommended.
Apply the nematodes to moist lawns when the soil temperature exceeds 10°C. Always adhere to the instructions on the packaging. After application, ensure the lawn is watered again to transport the nematodes to the grass roots where the larvae reside. Maintain a moist lawn for at least two weeks.
The nematodes, Steinernema feltiae, actively seek out leatherjacket larvae and enter their bodies through natural openings. Once inside, the larvae perish.
What Are Chafer Grubs?
Chafer grubs are the larvae of chafer beetles. During July, chafer beetles lay eggs in lawns and grassy areas. These eggs hatch into larvae that feed on grass roots, causing lawn damage. Our chafer nematodes effectively target these grubs, providing excellent control.
Identifying Chafer Grub Lawn Damage
Lawns with chafer grub infestations often develop yellowish patches. Birds, badgers, and foxes may dig up the lawn in search of these grubs. Chafer grubs are white and curved, with light brown heads and three pairs of legs at the head end. While leatherjackets can cause similar lawn damage, birds and animals are less likely to dig for them.
What and How do Nematodes Kill Chafer Grubs
Chafer nematodes locate chafer beetle larvae and enter their bodies through natural openings. Once inside, the chafer grub quickly dies.
Applying Chafer Killer Nematodes
Simply mix the nematodes with water according to the instructions and water the lawn. Apply to a moist lawn, ideally after sunset to prevent rapid soil drying. For optimal results, keep the soil consistently moist.
When to Treat Chafer Grubs with Nematodes
The best time to apply chafer nematodes is from late July to early September.
