Compost flies can quickly become a nuisance around compost bins and heaps, particularly when damp kitchen waste provides ideal breeding conditions. Our Compost Fly Treatment offers a natural way to tackle the problem by targeting the larvae before they develop into adult flies.
Containing live beneficial nematodes, this biological treatment works directly within the compost, where the nematodes actively search for fly larvae. By controlling the larvae at the source, the treatment helps reduce adult fly numbers and interrupt the breeding cycle without using chemical pesticides.
Natural Compost Fly Control for Compost Heaps and Bins
Designed for use in compost heaps and compost bins, this easy-to-apply treatment uses beneficial nematodes to control compost fly larvae. It provides an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical treatments while helping to maintain a healthy composting environment.
Benefits of Using Beneficial Nematodes
- Natural biological treatment that targets compost fly larvae
- No chemical pesticides required
- Safe for children, pets, wildlife and beneficial insects when used as directed
- Suitable for use in compost bins and compost heaps
- Helps interrupt the compost fly breeding cycle
- Easy to apply with a watering can or suitable sprayer
- One pack treats up to 12m² of compost surface
How Does Compost Fly Treatment Work?
Beneficial nematodes are microscopic organisms that naturally seek out insect larvae in moist environments. Once applied to the compost, they move through the damp material in search of compost fly larvae, helping to control the infestation before more adult flies emerge.
Apply the treatment evenly across the compost surface, paying particular attention to damp areas and fresh organic waste where compost flies are most likely to breed. For the best results, apply when compost temperatures are above 8°C and maintain moisture levels for three to four weeks following treatment. A further application may be needed where infestations are particularly heavy.
How to Mix and Apply Compost Fly Nematodes
- Empty the entire packet into 1.2 litres of water, stirring continuously to create a stock solution.
- Take 0.6 litres of the stock solution and mix with 5.4 litres of water, stirring thoroughly.
- Pour the diluted 6-litre mixture into a watering can fitted with a coarse rose.
- Apply evenly over approximately 6m² of compost surface.
- Repeat with the remaining stock solution to treat a total area of up to 12m².
- Lightly water the treated compost immediately after application.
Best Conditions for Effective Treatment
- Apply when compost temperatures are above 8°C
- Choose an overcast day, evening or period of light rainfall
- Ensure the compost is moist before applying the treatment
- Water lightly immediately after application
- Keep the compost moist for three to four weeks following treatment
- Avoid excessive watering or waterlogging
Application Equipment
Apply using a watering can fitted with a coarse 1.4mm rose or a suitable nematode sprayer. If using a sprayer, remove any filters with a mesh finer than 1.4mm and use a maximum pressure of 5 bar through nozzles measuring at least 0.5mm.
If the solution is applied over plants, water within 30 minutes to wash the nematodes from the foliage into the compost or growing medium where the larvae are present.
Storage and Handling
Refrigerate the nematodes as soon as possible after delivery and store below 5°C until the expiry date printed on the packaging. Do not freeze or expose the product to high temperatures. Once mixed with water, the nematode solution must be used within four hours.
Please note: This is a perishable live product with an approximate shelf life of two weeks. Keep refrigerated until required and check the expiry date on the pack before use.
